CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

The kettle boiled at the same moment as Emma’s phone pinged with another message. Her heart sank when she read it. Instead of telling him about the crash giving her more time, it had actually done the opposite. Bloody insurance! Why hadn’t she thought of that? She threw her phone on the worktop in disgust. Her brain was so overloaded, there was no room for her thoughts to gather themselves into sensible solutions.

With a heartfelt sigh, she made a cup of tea, taking it over to the recliner with a packet of biscuits.

It was hard to escape her own hypocrisy. Here she was sending messages to a secret husband while berating Sam for keeping his own secrets. How the heck had she got herself in such a mess? And how was she going to get herself out of it? At least she had a day to work through her options before Sam got home.

The situation with Zach was all based on a misunderstanding. Or maybe she hadn’t been listening properly. After his accident she was in shock, not computing anything properly at all, and there were so many different doctors talking to her, using terminology she didn’t understand. All she could see was her husband, her dreams of a family, broken in a way that could never be mended. Her future taken away from her by someone else’s negligence. It was a hard blow to bear.

She remembered sitting by his bed, holding his unresponsive hand, staring at the tubes and wires that snaked in and out of his body. Her mind filled with the bleeping of the machines, slow and steady, often the only outward sign that he was alive.

A man approached her, the consultant who was in charge of his care. She listened while he gave her an update, his final sentence making her bow her head and weep. ‘There is only one way this is going to end,’ he said, and she nodded, understanding in that moment that her life had changed for ever. Her perfect husband was not going to be part of her future.

She’d assumed the doctor meant Zach was expected to die. And even though he seemed to rally a bit once he was moved from the hospital to the specialist centre, to her he looked close to death, his skin so pale it was almost translucent. Reliant on machines to keep him alive. Unable to communicate except in the most basic way.

She was grieving for him even though he was still alive, because it couldn’t be long until she was saying her last goodbye. Mentally, she’d descended into a terrible dark and lonely place. Then she’d scared herself with suicidal thoughts, attended the bereavement group and met Sam.

The connection was instant, and initially it was a welcome distraction from her visits to her disabled husband. Sam was supposed to be a diversion, not her future. But she fell for him so hard she couldn’t think about anything except the possibility of a new chance at life.
